The big story going into Thursday nights game wasn’t the Yankees looking to upp their winning streak to 9. It was the home debut of red-hot rookie Bo Bichette, who stole the show and won the battle, but not the war as the Yankees bats spoiled the party with a HR party of their own in a 12-6 win.
The win is the Yankees 9th straight and it lowers their magic number to clinch the AL East down to 37.
The Yankees got to Toronto starter Thomas Pannone early and often, as after a DJ LeMahieu lead off double to start the game, Gio Urshela stepped up and delivered again for the the Yankees, as he clobbered a 2run HR to left to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead.
The Yankees would pour it on in the 3rd, as with the runners on 2nd and 3rd with one one out, a Wild pitch scored Bryveic Valera, before Gio popped another 2run blast into the seats that gave the Yankees a 5-0 lead. Later in the inning, Camron Maybin stepped up and singled in Didi Gregorious, before Mike Tauchman stayed red-hot as he went deep for a 2run HR that capped off the 6 run 3rd and gave the Yankees a commanding 8-0 lead.
Domingo German started for the Yankees and was great for the first 4 innings before falling apart in the 6th, as top prospects Derek Fisher( Solo HR) and Bo Bitchette (2run HR) went deep to get the Jays faithful back into the game and cut the Yankees lead down to 8-3. Then, later in the inning Lourdes Gueriel JR came through with an RBI single that cut the Yankees lead in half down to 8-4 and completed a 4 run 5th that put a dampen on an otherwise quality night out of Domingo German.
In the top of the 6th, the Yankees would answer the young Toronto offense back, as DJ drove in 2 runs with an RBI single that extended the Yankees lead to 10-4,
only to be answered by an historic Bo Bichette RBI double and a Reese Mcquire blast, as the Yankees lead was cut to 4 once again at 10-6.
But in the 9th, the Yankees would seal the deal on the feisty Blue Jays as Mike Tauchman would single home 2 more Yankees runs before Luis Cessa pitched a scoreless inning to complete his 3 innings of 1 run ball outing, as the Yankees ran their winning streak up to 9 with a 12-6 victory.
MVP: Gio Urshela
THOUGHTS:
What a win! It was a wild slugfest, but we got through it and won the game! It’s amazing seeing the way Gio, Tauchman, DJ and Maybin continue to produce night in and night out. That Bo kid is really good tip of the cap to him, but we were able to get through it and survive!
German wasn’t that great tonight, but he can and will be better! He did enough to get the win and that’s what matters!
Great job out of Cessa holding down the fort enough that we didn’t have to use any of our core guys bedsides Green for an inning which was great. Always nice to give your bullpen a rest.
9 in a row! Let’s make it 10 on Friday!!
STATS TO KNOW:
The Yankees have 19 HRs in the last 4 games. That is the most in a 4 game stretch in MLB history.
This is the first time in franchise history the Yankees have scored 9+ runs and have hit 3+ HRs in 4 straight games.
This is the first time in franchise history, the Yankees have averaged 8.5 runs in a 9 game span, over a 9 game winning streak too.
Bo has now doubled in 9 straight games! He is the 1st player in the modern Era to do that and he’s only played 11 games in the Majors!!! This kid is something special!
FAN OPINIONS:
ELI RUBEN:
I thought the offense was great as usual ! However, I was just kind of upsetat the way German pitched tonight. He was great the first 4 innings, than went downhill fast. That’s not the pitching we need in the postseason.
But I’ll take the win though! 9 in a row, let’s make it 10 on Friday!!
UP NEXT:
The Yankees (75-39) will go for their 10th straight win on Friday night when they send former Blue Jay JA Happ to the mound against Sean -Reid Folly of Toronto.
Game time is 7:05 PM.
