THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY (MARCH 15TH).

Today In sports history, the legendary pitcher CY Young retired with 511 wins. Now let’s answer the age old question, “Why did CY Young get an award named after him, and how did he get his nickname?”

To answer the first part of the question, if was to honor is legacy and his memory, as he was the best pitcher in baseball during his time in the 1890’s and the early 1900’s.

Young got his nickname, because the fences that he would hit while warming looked like a cyclone had come right through them.

The award was introduced in 1956, and has been an honor for the best pitchers in each league to win it ever since.
