THRILLING THURSDAY SPORTS UPDATE 1/23

Update on our NY teams

KNICKS: 8-11

The Knicks probably were never so happy to return home, after seeing a 25 point comeback, and a 31 point performance by rookie Immanuel Quickly in a 116-113 defeat at the hands of the Portland Trail Blazers.

Then on Tuesday, it was the Knicks who had the lead, as Austin Rivers went 10-10 early, with 25 points in 11 minutes, with New York boasting to a 15 point lead, and a 59-46 advantage at halftime. But an enormous 63-35 second half by Utah, saw the Jazz rally for a 109-94 win, and a split of the season series against the Knicks. Unless these two teams make it to the NBA finals(Which is very unlikely), these two won’t meet again until next season.

NY is now 8-11, and head back East after a 1-3 west coast trip.

NETS: 12-8

Kevin Durant had a “cold” game with 20 points, Kyrie Irving also had an “off night” with 16, but that’s why you have James Harden, who turned a close battle into a blowout, with a resurgent fourth quater performance, leading the Nets past the Heat 98-85. Harden finished with 20 points on the night, capping off a frame that saw the Nets outscore Miami 28-14 in the fourth, including a 15-0 run led by the big three.

Last night, the big three rose up again, with sharp shooters filling in as well, in Bruce Brown, and Jeff Green hitting big shots in a thrilling 132-128 OT victory over the pesky Atlanta Hawks.

ISLANDERS: 3-3

There’s a reason why I placed this team third in last weeks power rankings(Up from 7 in pre season), is because they’re 3-1 start, made them look like that Eastern Conference Final team from last season. But a 3-0 shoutout loss to the Devils, and a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to the undermanned Capitals(Without Ovechkin, Kusnetzsov, Orlov, and Samsonav due to COVID 19).

It was a tough one to swallow because the Islanders had killed off a 5:00 penalty, and the game looked bound for OT tied at two goals apiece. But then, a Jordan Schultz sniper with 27 seconds remaining, dealt goaltender Semeyon Varlamov his first loss of the season.

The loss is NY’s second straight prompting coach Barry Trotz to make changes, headed into game seven.
