It may not have looked like it on the stat sheet, but just the way the game was going, you could feel it. The Miami Marlins came back from the dead, to dismantle the Yankees both physically, and mentally , in their 9-3 debacle over the Bombers that forced a split of this two-game series.
Some conserversal decisions came back to backfire the Yankees in this one, so let's jump right in.
The pitching matchup featured Lance Lynn ( For the Yankees), against Trevor Richards for the Marlins. Just like last night, it was a pitching duel through 3 innings of play, with the score still deadlocked at 0. However, that would change when the Yankees struck first in the same inning, as they did last night, the 4th. It was also by by the same player, Neil Walker, Neil continued his hot streak against lowly teams with an RBI double to right field , to plate Aaron Hicks from first base, and give the Yankees an early 1-0 lead .
That lead was extended in the top of the 6th inning, when Walker came up again and this time plated Brett Gardner, on a sacfly,to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead. That seemed to be enough for Lynn, who cruised through the first 5 innings before, unraveling in the 6th.
After giving up two straight singles to lead off the inning, and a ground ball to move the runners to second and third, Lynn threw a curveball, that was hit by Austin Dean to the left side.
But , a nice diving stop by Gleyber Torres,( The Yankees temporary shortstop) prevented two runs from scoring, and only allowed one, so if you are keeping score at home, it's a 2-1 game now.
With runners on first and second ,and only one out, Miguel Rojas, made Lynn work, and then finally Lynn blinked, as he served up a four-seam fastball, that Rojas crushed into the stands for a 3 run HR to give the fish a 4-2 lead. Just like that, with one swing of the bat, Lance's start was a bad one, and with his confidence sapped , Lynn gave up and infield single, before finally being relived. In came Tommy Kahnle, for the Yankees and followed the amount of confidence Lance had when he left the mound , by giving up an RBI double to Yadiel Rivera, scoring Sierra from first, to give the Marlins a 5-2 lead, and cap off a 5 run 6th inning.
But if there is one thing about this Yankees team, it's that they never give up ,and showed that with a 2 out rally in the 7th. Luke Voit singled, then Brett Gardner walked, and then advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch. So up came Giancarlo Stanton , with runners on second and third with two outs. Stanton hit a chopper to the infield grass, that wasn't fielded cleanly for an infield single, to get the bombers to within 5-3. IT looked like that would be the start of a crazy rally with Aaron Hicks at the plate, but unfortunately for Hicks, he got called out on a conserveral called strike 3 to end the threat . After that , the Yankees did something I never thought they would do especially only down by two runs with six outs to go . They punted the game away , and what I mean by that is , the Yankees brought in ( Subustute reliver ) Chance Adams, ( Meaning the only reason he was on the roster , is because Aroldis Chapman is on the shelf).
For some reason, Yankees manager Araon Boone , decided to not use his high leverage guys , even though they were all avalible, and went with the back end of his teams bullpen. After that , the game got out of hand , as Chance issued a leadoff walk , which only was a sigh of bad things to come , as the Yankees made two fielding that inning , and looked lazy and lost , which luckily only led to one run being scored and a 6-3 lead after 7 for the fish . Here is my opinion on the "punt" by Boone and the Yankees.
” Sure,i Understand, that the Yankees were deflated after that 7th inning rally ended, but while I was feeling down about that watching the game , I still believed that our team could win the game “ “ Only down two runs with 6 outs to go , that’s duable , especially against this team that we were facing “
“ I usally cut the Yankees a lot of slack after losses , but tonight, I just couldn’t wrap my head around the move by Boone , with 3 Innings to go , and your team only down 2 runs , in my opinion, you go to one of your high levrage guys for the 7th inning , and then if the game is out of hand by the 8th,then you go to one of your back end guys , not reverse “
The reason why i said reverse , is because , after 3 more Marlins runs crossed home plate on Adams watch in the 8th , ( a 2 run HR by Riddle , and an RBI double by Castro ) the Yankees went to a high levrage reliever in AJ Cole to finish out the 8th.
I want to make this very clear , that I have nothing against Adams or Boone, and I actually think that Boone is a great calm , cool , and collected manger. I am just dumfounded why Boone put Adams first instead of Cole . But I don't think Boone deserves all the blame for this loss. As for Adams , I am not trying to take anything away from the fact that he earned that substitute role, with his performance in the minors.
Anyway ,the Yankees ended up losing 9-3.
