Domingo German pitched lights out ball , Gleyber Torres, went deep again, and the Yankees bullpen lockdown two wins in one day, as the Yankees completed the sweep of the doubleheader today in the Bronx by defeating the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 on a beautiful Wednesday night (5/15) at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx,NY.
Unlike the first game, runs were at a premium in this game, as Domingo German and Andrew Cashner both traded zeros, while racking up the strikeouts throughout their outings before handing it over to their respective bullpens to finish the game off.
For the Yankees offense, they had trouble getting to Cashner early, as he struck out the first five Yankees batters, and retired the first eight before DJ LeMahieu hit a come-backer off Cashner’s glove hand that resulted in a base hit and the Yankees first base runner of the ball game.
On the very next pitch after that DJ single , Luke Voit snapped his quiet 0 for 22 slump, by ripping a double to left field that scored LeMahieu as he beat the tag home to give the Yankees the first run of the ball game, as they took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning. Then, in the bottom of the 4th, Gleyber Torres stepped up, and showed that he wasn’t satisfied with 2HRs on the day, as he clubbed a ball to left center field that gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead, and Torres a hat trick on the day, as that was the third time he went deep in this doubleheader.
As for Domingo German, those two runs off Cashner were all he needed, as he went 7 innings of 1 run ball with 8Ks, as the lone Orioles run, came on a Hanser Alberto sac fly in the fifth inning, that cut the Yankees lead down to 2-1.
In the 7th, things got real spicy for German, as the O’s loaded the bases with 2 outs for Joey Richard, who grounded into a force out at 2B, ending the threat, as a pumped up German departed from the mound to the dugout, for the 7th and final time this evening.
With the Yankees looking for insurance runs, Luke Voit stepped up in the 7th, and completed his amazing night, by lining an RBI single to left that scored Thairo Estrada giving the Yankees a 3-1 lead, and allowing the large gathering of fans at the stadium to chant “LUUUKE” once again.
The final two innings, were dominated by Zack Brittion and Aroldis Chapman, as both worked scoreless innings , with Chapman recording his second save of the day, as the Yankees locked up the sweep of the O’s with a 3-1 win.
MVP: Domingo German
Double header MVP: Gleyber Torres
Leftovers:
Kendrys Morales made his Yankees debut in this contest, and had a solid game, by working 2 walks, and legging out his first Yankees hit in 4 at bats.
Aaron Hicks was back in CF today, as he made his season debut and went 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts at the dish. It will take Aaron time to ease back into things at the major league level, after not being active the first 40 games of the season with a lower back issue.
The Yankees won tonight and didn’t even need to use their deep bench in this one, that consisted of Gio Urshela, Brett Gardner and Gary Sanchez.
Stats you need to know:
Domingo German is now 8-1 on the season and he leads the league in wins.
Luke Voit went 3 for 4 tonight with 2RBIS.
The Yankees are a season high 10 games
over .500 at 26-16.
Injury news:
Miguel Andujar has opted to have surgery on his torn labrum in his left shoulder that will end his season. This doesn’t shock many people, as Andujar didn’t look right when he came off the IL on May 4th, before landing on it again on May 13th.
I wish Andujar a normal recovery, and hope that he replicates his unbelievable rookie season next year in 2020.
Fun Fact:
Game 1 of the Yankees doubleheader sweep over the O’s took 2 hours and 21 minutes to complete. That is the fastest Yankees game since August 21st 2014, as the Yankees defeated the Astros in a game that took 2 hours and 7 minutes.
It took 281 minutes (4 hours 41 minutes) to complete today’s doubleheader in the Bronx. There have been two Yankees-Red Sox games that have gone longer then that, and have only taken NINE INNINGS!!!
Up Next:
The Yankees (26-16) will have a day off Thursday, before they host the Tampa Bay Rays (26-15) at Yankee Stadium on Friday night (5/17) in the beginning of a three game series that will decide who takes the AL East lead heading into next week.
The Rays haven’t announced their starter yet for Friday’s opener, but the Yankees have and it’s CC Sabathia.
