Round 2 at the US Open is here! Follow along!
Before we get into the action around the grounds in Flushing, NY I want to give you some storylines from RD 1 outside of the big 3.
TSPITAS, THIEM OUSTED:
No 8 seed Stephen TSPITAS and NO 4 seed Dominic Thiem have been ousted in the 1st round!
TSPITAS lost to fellow youngster Andre Rublev 6-4, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5. Stephen had a great start to the match and was in a close battle before he started cramping up in the 4th and lost.
As for Thiem, he was out of shape and just didn’t look into it as he fell to Thomas Fababino 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
HOT COCO:
She first made headlines at Wimbledon by defeating Venus Williams before proceeding to win 3 more matches only to lose to Simona Hale And is Back now! 15 year old American Coco Gauff rallied and won her US Open debut yesterday 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 over Anastasia Popatova ranked 72nd in the world! Coco is a Wild Card in this tournament but seems like much more then that! We will see how she does in RD 2 on Thursday!
SERENA BESTS SHARAPOVA:
Serena Williams bested Maria Sharpova in a blockbuster 1st RD matchup 6-1, 6-1.
TODAY:
KEI HANGS ON:
7 seed Kei Nishikori seemed to have victory in the bag as he led American Brandon Khlan 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 5-1, but Brandon saved two match points and game roaring back to tie the 4th set at 5!
But that would be all for Brandon, as Kei would win the last 2 games to take the set 7-5 and the match.
FED VS DZUMHUR:
Rodger and David will meet up now.
3-0 DZUMHUR:
Fed is all out of sorts just like he was early in the 1st RD and trails 3-0.
4-1 DZUMHUR:
Fed seems to be getting back into it as he breaks David to cut his deficit to 4-1.
5-2 DZUMHUR
Both players hold. David looks like he will take this first set as Rodger has a lot of work to do if he wants to win it.
🚨 DZUMHUR TAKES 1ST SET:
We are officially on upset watch as Rodger drops the 1st set 6-3. The fans in attendance are stunned.
3-0 FED:
That’s more like it!! Rodger is all over Dzumhur now as he leads by a break. The crowd is roaring again!!
4-1 FED
He’s back now! Rodger is pressing and Dzumhur is folding under the pressure or playing Rodger.
Federer has looked a lot better this set! The confidence is back boys!
5-2 FED
Rodger saves a couple of break points and leads 5-2 here in this second set. This match has completely flipped around.
FED TAKES 2ND SET:
Rodger breaks Dzumhur to love and has taken the second set 6-2! He’s officially back!
3-0 FED:
Rodger is looking extremely good right now. I think I should stop blogging until something exciting happens because Fed is just to good right now and I love to see it! That’s basically the story of this match.
FED TAKES 3RD SET:
Rodger holds his service game to take the 3rd set 6-3. Leads 2 sets to 1!
FED WINS 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4!
Rodger got the break in the 3rd game of the 4th set and ran with it! He wins and is on to RD3!
VENUS OUSTED:
Venus Williams has fallen to No 5 seed Elina Svitilona 6-4, 6-4.
NOVAK WINS:
Novak Djokovic is unsurprisingly Into RD3 as he took down Lordan Lorenzo 6-4, 7-6, 6-1.
