It was a week to forget for NY Sports ,as the Yankees lost their series to the Toronto Blue Jays , and the Mets lost their series to the Boston Red Sox( 0-8,5-3,4-3) despite CY Young candidate , Jacob DeGrom pitching his 26th straight quality start in the finale . Meanwhile, in the NFL , the Giants and Jets both lost this week , due to lack of offense.
So let’s dive in, and see what went wrong .
MLB:
The Yankees responded to my letter very nicely on Friday night (9/14), as they flew past the Jays 11-0!
Masahiro Tanaka threw 6 scoreless innings , as the Yankees seemed to be revved up by the sellout crowd at Yankee Stadium!
The Yankees meanwhile, would score early and often as they would get to Blue Jays pitcher Marco Estrada early and often, as they put up five runs in the first inning! That 5 run frame was capped by a beautiful ground rule double by Luke Voit that drove in 2 runs !
Other key hits on that inning were, an Andrew Mccutchen leadoff double , Aaron Hicks RBI single, Miguel Andujar RBI groundout , and a Gleyber Torres RBI infield single!
The Yankees wouldn’t stop there and scored 3 more runs in the 3rd inning all with 2 outs , which was capped by a Giancarlo Stanton snapping out of slump 2 run single .
With an 8-0 lead, the HR ball came into play , as Andrew Mccutchen, went deep for his first Yankee Stadium HR in the 5th to put the Yankees up 9-0!
In the top of the 8th inning , the moment Yankees fans have been waiting for 11 weeks , arrived , Aaron Judge returns!!!!!!
Well sort of , Judge was cleared to play the field , and run the bases , but can’t hit yet .
Anyway he came in to a rousing ovation, and even made a fans day by flipping a souvenir into the stands !
Anyway even though no balls were hit in his direction, it was still great to see him back !
The Yankees would put their final runs on the board in the bottom of the 8th, when Didi Gregorius went deep , and Brett Gardner drove in his second run of the game with a sac fly ( Gardy drove in the 6th run of the game in the 3rd with an RBI single ) .
That was the final touch to an 11-0 Yankees romp!
HERO: Masahiro Tanaka, ZERO: Marcus Estrada , UNSUNG HERO: Andrew Mccutchen ( Had a single, double , a HR , walked twice , and scored twice )
Any hopes about the Yankees finally snapping out of their funk after Friday nights win, were quickly erased the very next day , as the Yankees fell 8-7 to the Blue jays .
What happened , was the exact opposite of the predictions for this game , as CC Sabathia went up against Sean Reid Folly , and stunk up the joint .
Cc let up 5 runs in 2 innings , including 3 HRs. Two to Ryan Grichuk , and one to Kevin Pillar.
Just like that , the Yankees were in an early 5-0 hole.
Meanwhile, the Yankees offense could to nothing against Sean Reid -Folly who was brilliant, which is a complete opposite to his last outing in the Bronx , a few weeks ago. Reid -Folly pitched five scoreless innings ,while striking out 10.
But if their is one thing about the Yankees, is that they are determined not to get shutout, and made that happen, when Didi Gregorius went yard in the bottom of the 6th to cut the Yankees deficit to 5-1.
But the Yankees bullpen , would give those runs back however, as the Jays scored thrice in the 7th to take a commanding 8-1 lead.
However the Yankees wouldn’t go down without a fight as the HR ball rescued them from their misery in the bottom of the 7th , as Giancarlo Stanton continued to show signs of snapping out of his slump , when he homered to cut the deficit to Six. Then , Didi Gregorius continued to heat up by mashing his second HR of the game, to cut the Jays lead down to five at 8-3.
However, the fireworks of this 6 run 7th inning , came off the bat of Miguel Andujar, as with 2 outs and the bases loaded , Miguel crushed a grand slam to left field , and just like that , it was an 8-7 game now !
That HR electrified the Yankees crowd , but try as they might , the Yankees couldn’t get that tying run across in the final two innings , and ( In a 3:54 minute marothon) fell 8-7.
You know what they say “ I’d rather lose a game 8-1, then 8-7” , well unfortunately for the Yankees, it happened in this game .
HERO: Ryan Grichuk , ZERO: CC Sabathia, UNSUNG HERO: Sean Reid- Folly
The Yankees cemented the fact that their funk would continue, with a late series ending 3-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday (9/16) in the Bronx .
With the loss, the Yankees lose yet another series, this time 2-1 to the Blue Jays .
The game started out great for the Yankees as Lance Lynn worked a nice top of the first , before the Yankees pounced on Thomas Pannone , by striking first , as Andrew “ Mccutchen “ went deep to leadoff the bottom half of the first to give the Yankees an early 1-0 lead.
Then later in the inning , Didi Gregorius continued to produce runs , as his sac fly drove in Giancarlo Stanton for a 2-0 Yankees lead!
That seemed to be all that Lance Lynn needed as he coasted through the first two innings , before finally giving up a run , ( An RBI double for the red hot Randal Grichuk) .
Lance would go five innings of one run ball , while striking out 7.
After Lynn departed , It was time for the Yankees bullpen to to show their magnificence for the last four innings of the game , which they did for the first two innings , before collapsing in the 8th.
Delin Betances came in to relive David Robertson ( Who pitched two scoreless innings in the 6th and 7th), in the 8th , and immediately fell into trouble , as he gave up two singles , and just like that, the Jays had runners on first and third with only one out.
Normally Betances would show his poise and get through this, but not this game , as Delin let up a game -tying RBI single to Rowdy Tellez , before giving up the go -ahead RBI double to ( Guess who?) Ryan Grichuk to put the Blue Jays ahead 3-2 , which would end up being your final score .
HERO: Ryan Grichuk ( 2 RBIs) , ZERO: Delin Betances, ( Let the tying ,and wining runs score ) UNSUNG HERO: Thomas Pannone ( Thomas rebounded to pitch 7 innings of 2 run ball)
Standings:
The Yankees now sit 11.5 games back in the AL East behind the Boston Red Sox (103-47) , who can clinch the division in the house of their rivals on Tuesday afternoon, when the Yankees send the undefeated JA Happ to the mound , to face off against former Yankee Nathan Evoldi .
Game time is 1:05 from the Bronx .
In the wildcard race , the Oakland Athletics lost 2 out of 3 over the weekend to the Tampa Bay Rays so the Yankees (91-58) still maintain their 1.5 game lead over the A’s for home field advantage in the Wild Card game .
Yankees notes: The Yankees basically announced after Sunday’s loss , that they have conceded the AL East division to the Boston Red Sox , and the focus now is nailing down that Wild card spot .
Over the weekend, the Yankees called up no 1 prospect, pitcher Justis Sheffield from Triple A.
NFL:
Giants : Lose 20-13
Jets : Lose 20-12
MVP race so far : Patrick Mahomes in my opinion leading the way ( Threw 6 TDs in the Chiefs week 2 win over the Steelers)
Week 2 storylines:
Awful day for kickers
Jags upset beat Pats 31-13
The New York Giants fell to 0-2 on “ Sunday night football “ when they lost 20-13 to their division rivals , the Dallas Cowboys , in Dallas.
From the outset things did not go right for the Giants , as Dak Prescott hit Tavon Austin with a 64 yard TD on the first drive of the game , to give the Cowboys an early 7-0 lead. Then , on their next drive , Dallas netted an FG to go up 10-0 .
As for the Giants offense, they couldn’t even get the ball across midfield the entire first half , as the G men’s O- line, was overwhelmed by the Cowboys defense, especially Giants QB ( Quarterback ) Eli Manning, who was sacked 6 times in the game .
When the Giants finally, did get the ball across midfield in quarter number 3, they were staring at a 13-0 deficit, with the Cowboys already having netted an FG ( A field goal) early in the period.
Oh , and what the Giants got out of that, “ Finally drive” was only an FG, as they still trailed 13-3.
Meanwhile, their was a players battle going on in this contest, as Saquon Barkley ( Giants rookie) , and Eziekel Elliot ( Cowboys veteran ) went at it .
Saquon has 14 catches ( A franchise record) , while Elliot ran for 78 yards, including a TD , that put his team up 20-3 in the 4th and salted the game away.
The Giants would hit double digits in the final minutes of the game , as Maning found Evan Engram for a TD, and then after the G-men recovered the onside kick , notched another FG to make the final score 20-13 in favor of Dallas .
Sam Darnold came back down to earth for the New York Jets , as after throwing two touchdowns in his NFL Debut against the Lions ( A 48-17 Jets win).
Sam came back down to earth in his home opener against the Miami Dolphins, as he threw for 334 yards, one touchdown, but threw two picks.
The Jets offense, wasn’t able to make up a 20-0 halftime deficit, and lost 20-12.
The Cleveland Browns will have to wait yet another week, to end their historic losing streak (17) , as after tying the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-21 in week1, the Browns suffered a heartbreaking 21-18 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday .
After blowing a 12-3 lead in the 4th, the Browns tied it up at 18 late, when Tyrod Taylor connected with Anthony Callaway for a 47 yard TD. However, the Browns needed the extra point for the lead ,and weren’t able to hit it , as Zane Gonzalez kicked the extra point wide right .
But life gives us second chances , and Gonzalez would get one, as with his team now down 21-18 ( After the Saints drive down the field for an FG) , Gonzalez missed wide right again, this time from. 52 Yards our ending the game ; and forcing the Browns streak to continue.
The ugly week for kickers continued in the Minnesota Vikings vs Green Bay Packers game. Down 20-7, Vikings cut it 29-21 , score TD ( And 2 pt conversion) with 31 seconds left to tie it . Then Aaron Rodgers Rodgers drove his team down in to FG range with 4 secs left Mason Crosby hits hits 52 yard FG! But a timeout was called. On the redo , Crosby misses overtime.
In overtime, Vikings rookie kicker Daniel Carlson, missed a 49 yard FG that would have given the Vikings the lead .
Then in the final seconds of overtime, Carlson missed again from 35 yards out , that would have given the Vikings the win.
The game ended in a 29-29 tie .
Trade alert:
The New England Patriots have acquired star Josh Gordon from the Cleveland Browns for a 5th round pick.
The Minnesota Vikings have acquired legendary kicker Dan Bailey off waivers .
Bailey was cut by the Dallas Cowboys this past offseason.
Up next :
Giants : At Houston Texans (0-2)
Jets ; At Browns (0-1-1) Thursday night football.
Leftovers :
The Red Sox honored Mets David Wright who will be retiring on Sep 29th, with a peice of the Green Monster .
The number 5 , Wright‘s number.
