Welcome to the Yeshivah league playoffs where history is made. Each day, we will recap the previous nights basketball or hockey postseason games and look ahead to what’s to come. Tuesday night kickstarted the party
so let’s play ball!
TUESDAY 2/22:
Varsity Hockey:
5. MDY(8-6-0-1) 1
4. Frisch(12-2-1) 12
Don’t let the overall seeding fool you for this was supposed to be a wipeout. The young and sophomore- laden Magen David Warriors feasted on a weaker schedule to reach the playoffs, while the season Cougars steamrolled through the regular season and were looking to make good on an opportunity to reach the semifinals for the second straight season.
The outcome was imminent about five minutes in when Frisch struck first and they never looked back en route to a 6-1 hold after the first 12 minutes, which felt eerily similar to the last time these guys were in this position two years ago, when they scored a jaw-dropping seven goals at YDE in their first postseason period. The Cougars potted two more goals before emptying the bench over the final 18 minutes, polishing off a 12-1 win to the delight of Cougars nation.
“I won’t be surprised if every team in the West beats every team in the East. That conference is loaded” said a Yeshivah league coach.
“We had a good run and I’m excited for our team next season” said junior Ikey Saff of MDY “We’re a young roster that’s only going to improve as we mend ourselves with the size and strength of most teams in the league.”
WEDNESDAY NIGHT(seedlings are overall)
Varsity basketball: 11. YMA(7-7) at 6. MDY(9-5)
Magen David dethroned the Kings 71-31 in the regular season and with their boisterous crowd on hand tonight at the always raucous Warrior dome, this is expected to be the case once again. It’s great that Magen Avraham is here, but they’ve struggled against top-tier competition, as none of their seven wins were against playoff teams this year.
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Magen Avaraham: Albert Souid
Magen David: Asher Melamded.
12. Hillel(6-8) @ 5. TABC(11-3)
Believe it or not, this may be a tight one, despite the contrast in records. In their regular season meeting at the weather center, the title favorites needed to use a futius second half run and hold off some late pushback by the Heat to get the job done 59-53: The Heat will be led by the dynamic duo of Elliot Braha and Eric Cytryn while the Storm will look to Harry Orlinsky, Netanel Benloulou, and Yis Kaminetzky, as the triple threat that will pour over into the rich depth the hosts have in their arsenal. The records and seeding may look lopsided but these two teams matchup well against each other which should present another playoff classic in this jersey rivalry.
JV BASKETBALL:
DRS(4-6) @ 2. FRISCH(8-2)
Its abnormal for the Wildcats to be in this spot, let alone have this record, but here they are with a chance to redeem themslev
