The HR happy Cubs showed their might and Yu Darvish turned in his best start of the year spoiling an historic milestone by Pete Alonso as the Cubs downed the Mets 5-2 in game 1 of a pivotal 3 game series at Citi Field.
The loss drops the Mets to 3 games back of the Cubs for the 2nd NL WC with 31 games to play.
Marcus Stroman started for the Mets in this one and after a strong first 4 innings, he stumbled in the 5th as Addison Russel blasted a go-ahead 2run HR before Cubs star Javier Baez did the same in the 6th to give the Cubs a 4-1 lead.
In the 8th, Baez was at it again as his RBI double capped off a 3for 3 day with 3RBIs propelling the Cubs to victory.
As for Chicago’s pitching, Yu Darvish was phenomenal with his only real blemish coming in the 4th when Pete Alonso blasted his 42nd HR of the season which broke the Mets franchise record and gave them a 1-0 lead. Darvish would settled down after that and go 8 innings of 1 run ball with 7Ks as his teams offense went deep twice and took the lead giving Yu even more confidence to stymie a Mets offense that has now only scored 7 runs in 44 innings.
JD Davis went deep in the 9th to keep his hot streak alive but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Mets fell 5-2.
MVP: Yu Darvish
THOUGHTS:
Congratulations to Pete Alonso on his record-breaking HR and Wilson Ramos on extending his hitting streak to 20 games tonight, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough.
Just have to tip your cap to the Cubs tonight and come right back tomorrow.
UP NEXT:
The Mets will look to even up this series on Wednesday night (8/28) when Noah Syndergaard heads to the mound against Kyle Hendricks.
Game time is 7:10PM.
